Kommetjie and the South Peninsula — surf, scenery, and what to do beyond the break
Kommetjie sits at the point where the Cape Peninsula stops feeling like a suburb of Cape Town and starts feeling like its own thing entirely. The drive from the city takes around 45 minutes and the change in atmosphere is noticeable — fewer people, bigger ocean, more exposed coastline, and a surf scene that rewards commitment over convenience.
Check the live Kommetjie surf report before making the drive. On the right swell and wind combination, the South Peninsula is one of the best surf environments within reach of Cape Town. On a poor forecast, the distance makes it a harder call to justify.
What makes the South Peninsula different
The South Peninsula — roughly the stretch of coastline from Noordhoek through Kommetjie, Scarborough, and Misty Cliffs — faces a different part of the Atlantic than the Table Bay beaches further north. This means the swell patterns, wind character, and overall wave environment can be meaningfully different from what Bloubergstrand or Big Bay is doing at the same time. Experienced Cape Town surfers treat the Peninsula as a separate forecast decision, not just a longer drive to a similar beach.
Kommetjie and Long Beach are the most accessible starting points. Noordhoek and Scarborough extend the mission feel further. Misty Cliffs is genuinely remote for a beach within the Cape Town municipal area — see the Misty Cliffs surf report when you want the most committed call on the Peninsula.
Where to eat near Kommetjie
Kommetjie village itself is small, which means the food options are limited and worth checking in advance before making the drive specifically for lunch. The Long Beach area has a café and convenience food strip oriented toward the beach crowd. For a more developed dining scene, Noordhoek Farm Village is around ten minutes north and offers a collection of restaurants, bakeries, and local food producers in a relaxed outdoor setting that works well as a pre or post-surf stop.
Scarborough, a short drive south of Kommetjie, has a small local café scene that suits the remote village character of the area.

Scarborough café strip
Small but worthwhile if you are already heading to Scarborough for a surf check. The village has a handful of local cafes suited to a quiet post-session coffee.

Where to stay near Kommetjie
Accommodation on the South Peninsula tends toward smaller guesthouses, self-catering cottages, and surf-oriented backpackers rather than large hotels. Staying in the area gives you direct access to the Peninsula surf scene without the daily drive from Cape Town, which becomes especially valuable when you want to track a multi-day swell window across several spots. Kommetjie and Scarborough both have self-catering options that suit an overnight or weekend mission rather than a longer stay.
What to do beyond surfing on the South Peninsula
The Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park is the obvious larger draw. The cape itself, along with the lighthouse at Cape Point and the surrounding fynbos landscape, is one of the most visited natural sites in South Africa and worth combining with a surf check on the same day if you have the time. Chapman's Peak, the mountain road that runs between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, is a worthwhile drive or cycling route for the views alone.
Boulders Beach at Simon's Town, on the False Bay side, adds the penguin colony as an easy add-on if you are doing a full Peninsula day. The False Bay coastline from Simon's Town back toward Muizenberg also gives you several surf check options — see the False Bay surf report for the live comparison.
