Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Cape Wave Check ("the site," "we," "us") collects, uses, and protects information when you visit capewavecheck.com. By using this site, you agree to the practices described in this policy. This policy was last updated in April 2025.
Information we collect
Cape Wave Check collects two types of information: information you provide directly, and information collected automatically through your use of the site.
Information you provide: If you contact us via the contact page, submit an advertiser enquiry, or sign up for our newsletter, we collect the information you submit — typically your name, email address, and any message or enquiry details. This information is used only to respond to your contact or manage your subscription. We do not sell this information to third parties.
Information collected automatically: When you visit the site, certain information is collected automatically by our analytics and advertising providers. This includes your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, referring URL, pages visited, and time spent on pages. This data is collected in aggregated and anonymised form and is used to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it.
Cookies
Cape Wave Check uses cookies — small text files stored on your device — to support site functionality and to enable third-party analytics and advertising services. The cookies used on this site fall into three categories.
Functionality cookies: The site uses browser localStorage to remember your saved favourite beaches between visits. This data is stored entirely on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.
Analytics cookies: We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site. Google Analytics sets cookies on your device that collect information about your visit, including which pages you viewed and how long you spent on the site. This information is processed by Google and shared with us in aggregated, anonymised reports. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Advertising cookies: We use Google AdSense to display advertisements on this site. Google AdSense may set cookies on your device to show you personalised ads based on your browsing history and interests. You can manage your Google ad personalisation settings at adssettings.google.com.
Third-party services
Google Analytics — used to measure site traffic and user behaviour. Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy.
Google AdSense — used to display advertisements. AdSense may use cookies and device identifiers to deliver relevant ads.
Google Fonts — the site loads typefaces from Google Fonts, which may log requests to Google's servers including your IP address.
Open-Meteo — the site fetches live weather and marine data from the Open-Meteo API via a server-side proxy. No personal information about you is sent to Open-Meteo.
WorldTides — the site fetches tide data from WorldTides via a server-side proxy. No personal information about you is sent to WorldTides.
How we use your information
The information we collect is used to operate and improve the site, to respond to enquiries or support requests, to understand how the site is used, and to display relevant advertisements through Google AdSense. We do not use your information to build individual profiles for marketing purposes beyond what Google's advertising platform manages through its own tools.
Data retention
If you contact us or submit an enquiry, we retain your contact information for as long as is necessary to resolve your enquiry or manage any ongoing business relationship. You can request deletion of any personal information you have submitted to us by contacting us at hello@capewavecheck.com.
Your rights
If you are located in the European Union, the United Kingdom, South Africa, or another jurisdiction with data protection legislation, you may have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, to request correction or deletion of that information, to object to certain processing, and to request that we restrict processing in certain circumstances. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@capewavecheck.com.
Children's privacy
Cape Wave Check is not directed at children under the age of 13 and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted personal information through this site, please contact us so we can delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page.
