Local Guide
Dolphin Beach is a known wind-and-water-sports zone and is especially relevant when people want a more specific call than a broad Table View check. It is less about soft beginner surfing and more about whether the wind and beach setup justify going.
Local Read
Best for
Kite surfers, strong wind sessions, and riders comparing the central Table Bay strip.
Usually works when
Best when the wind is properly on and you are happy with a more dedicated water-sports beach than a mellow surf-only session.
Watch for
Dangerous swimming conditions, strong wind, and assuming the beach is gentle because access is easy.
Access and crowd
Large parking and easy visibility make it convenient, but that convenience can hide how demanding the conditions are. Popular with wind-driven users and active beach traffic.
Session tip
Use Dolphin Beach when your decision is mostly about wind quality and beach utility, not whether the surf will feel soft or beginner-friendly.
Parking and arrival
Parking is generous, which makes this one of the easier windy-beach checks to commit to quickly.
Spot Guide
Dolphin Beach is the dedicated water sports beach in the Table View area, about 18 kilometres north of central Cape Town via the N1 and R27. It is specifically known as a kite surfing beach and is one of the most active kite launch sites on the Table Bay coast, with a designated kite zone, large parking area, and an established community of regular wind riders. On strong Cape Doctor days the beach is consistently busy from early afternoon.
The southeast Cape Doctor wind fills in cleanly at Dolphin Beach from around midday on most days, producing reliable kite sessions in the 20 to 35 knot range. The beach is wide enough to manage multiple simultaneous launches without the congestion that can develop at narrower spots, and the sandy bottom makes for safer conditions if a kite comes down unexpectedly. The wind consistency here is among the most reliable on the Table Bay coast.
Surfing at Dolphin Beach is secondary to the kite scene. The waves can be reasonable on light wind days but the beach is fundamentally oriented toward wind-powered sports and loses much of its appeal for surfing once the Cape Doctor arrives. When the wind is not blowing, the spot is a less compelling surf destination compared with alternatives nearby along the strip.
The beach has large paid parking, toilets, and straightforward access from the R27, making it one of the easiest wind-sport beaches to find and use on the Table Bay coast. It works well for visitors who already know they want a kite session and want to confirm conditions before arriving. Checking the Dolphin Beach report before driving confirms wind speed and direction and gives a quick read on whether the session is likely to be underpowered, ideal, or overpowered.
Dolphin Beach is practical, visible, and wind-led - ideal for riders who already know they are chasing power over softness.
Common Questions
For many people, yes. It is strongly associated with wind and water sports and is less of a beginner surf beach than softer Cape Town options.
Usually no. Conditions can be dangerous, and the beach is better treated as a sports-focused beach than a casual swim beach.
Because Dolphin Beach gives a more specific wind-and-beach utility read when you want to know whether a proper sporty session is worth it.

Local Decision Notes
Wind first
Some beaches can still be worth it with less wind if the angle is cleaner. Stronger wind is not always the better session.
Tide second
A spot that looks average now can improve quickly when the tide starts pushing or drop off once the turn passes.
Local context
Parking, rips, launch pressure, crowd behaviour, and nearby alternatives matter just as much as the raw forecast numbers.
