    Local Guide

    Scarborough surf and kite guide

Scarborough sits deep on the South Peninsula and feels more remote, conservation-minded, and weather-exposed than the city beaches. It can be brilliant, but it is not the place for casual assumptions or soft conditions.

    What makes Scarborough different

    Best for

Experienced surfers, strong-wind riders, and people chasing a more remote South Peninsula feel.

    Usually works when

It works best when the forecast is clearly lined up and you are intentionally choosing a more exposed, lower-crowd day.

    Watch for

Power, current, and the temptation to overcommit because the setting looks beautiful.

    Access and crowd

A longer drive with a more remote feel, which makes confidence in the forecast much more important. Lower volume than city beaches, but more serious users show up when conditions are clearly good.

    Session tip

Scarborough should feel like a deliberate mission, not a casual backup plan.

    Parking and arrival

Keep the trip efficient because the value here comes from committing only when the conditions really justify the drive.

    Spot Guide

Scarborough — what to know before you go

Scarborough sits on the far southern Atlantic coast of the Cape Peninsula, beyond Kommetjie and about 50 kilometres from central Cape Town via the winding Peninsula road. The village is small, conservation-oriented, and distinctly non-urban — the contrast with the suburban beach strip to the north is significant. The beach faces the open Atlantic and picks up swell from a wide westerly to southwesterly window without the filtering effect of bay geography.

The surf at Scarborough can produce powerful, quality beach break waves on the right swell and wind combination. On a big southwest groundswell with clean northeast or offshore wind, sections of the beach can be hollow, fast, and genuinely impressive by Western Cape standards. The beach does not perform consistently across all conditions — it requires a specific setup to produce its best — which makes the surf report check more important here than at more reliably consistent spots.

Wind exposure at Scarborough is significant. The southeast Cape Doctor that dominates summer afternoons on the Table Bay coast also reaches Scarborough from a different angle, and the geography provides less shelter than spots inside the bay system. Strong wind days can be more physically demanding than the wind reading alone would suggest at a more sheltered beach.

The beach is adjacent to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and the surrounding area feels genuinely remote despite being within the Cape Town municipal boundary. There are very few facilities at or near the beach. When the forecast clearly aligns — a good swell, light morning wind, and the right tide — the reward is empty surf in one of the most exposed and scenic coastal settings within reach of the city.

Scarborough is far enough from the city to feel like a genuine mission but close enough that a strong forecast can justify the drive without an overnight stay. When the conditions are right it rewards the effort with a less crowded, more exposed experience than anything on the northern Atlantic strip.

    Common Questions

    Questions surfers actually ask

    Is Scarborough good for beginners?

Usually no. It is better treated as a stronger, more exposed South Peninsula option than a beginner default.

Why does Scarborough need a stronger forecast to justify the trip?

Because the drive is longer and the beach is more remote, so the conditions need to be clearly worth it.

How does Scarborough compare with Noordhoek?

Both feel more destination-like than city beaches, but Scarborough often feels even more remote and weather-exposed.
